Composition Machine No. 4, “Wandelende Tak”

This composition machine is an instrument and a musical score at the same time. It is an alternative way of music notation.

A conveyer belt functions as the score. It conveys small balls of glass, wood and metal. At the end of the belt, the balls fall down and hit the tuned metal tubes of the Tubephono Champignon.

For the composer the system of notation is very important. Notation stands between the composer and the musicians. And only music that obey the structure of the notation will get through. Many composers has this struggle: A dream of a music against the reality of the notation.

This machine will be presented as a performance. It plays music dictated by a new set of possibilities.
