Due to political conflicts with Ukraine, Russia tends to shut of gas supplies, leaving the country in crisis. Ukraine is very depended on cheap Russian gas, in order to keep its heavy industry working and keep it from going bankrupt.
During the times of the Soviet Union, Ukraine was responsible for a large number of steel production and energy supplies, due to its right source of coal and other raw materials. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Ukraine was left with this energy Legacy. Now responsible for maintaining the structures and the employment they generate, Ukraine struggles to implement modern safety and environmental regulations and energy efficiency upgrades.
In this on-going project I am using energy as not only a subject but also as an example to illustrate the consequences of Ukraine’s Soviet past on daily life.
